What is Kanban?
Kanban is a visual system for controlling production and inventory. “Kanban” means “signal card” in Japanese. Cards, bins or a visual board signal when to produce or move materials, so work is pulled by real demand instead of pushed by forecasts.
How PKP Technology implements Kanban
- Flow mapping: we map material and information flow and identify where stock builds up.
- Kanban design: card types, quantities and loops are calculated for each item.
- Supermarkets and visual boards: clear storage locations and boards show what to make next.
- Work-in-progress limits: limits stop overproduction and expose bottlenecks.
- Training: operators and supervisors learn the rules for using the cards.
- Review: card quantities are adjusted as demand and lead times change.
Benefits of Kanban
- Lower inventory and work-in-progress
- Fewer stock-outs and production delays
- Clear, visual control of the shop floor
- Faster response to customer demand
- Less overproduction and storage cost
Who can benefit

Frequently asked questions
Is Kanban only for production?
No. Kanban boards are also used for office work, projects and software teams to visualise and limit work in progress.
How many Kanban cards do we need?
The number depends on demand, lead time and safety stock. We calculate it for each item during design.
Can Kanban work with our ERP system?
Yes. Kanban can run alongside an ERP system, and electronic Kanban signals can be added later.
